By Ed Chavez, Staff Writer
Still seeing red after being knocked out prematurely but Oakland University last season, the Sun Devils looked to avenge their post-season lost.
Leading up to the re-match, ASU head coach Greg Powers reminded his squad of the season ending blow the Oakland University delivered by forwarding the video of the goal to his team. Fired up the Sun Devils would take the ice, controlling much of the game during the first period.
The game would be highlighted by it’s goaltending. Devils’ Joe D’Elia would stand in net coming into the match with a 9-0 record, facing off against Grizzlies’ Corey Hrischuk.
Incredible saves by both goalies would keep the game deadlocked late into the first but drawing first blood ASU’s Kale Dolinski accepted a pass from Sean Ritchie and to put it past the Grizzlies’ goaltender.
The Grizzlies would finish the period scoreless but came hard in the second. Dominating the first half, Oakland would tie the game up on a shot that rebounded into the air off Devils’ netminder D’Elia’s chest and into the net.
The dueling goaltenders would both let in a goal a piece but then force the game into a shootout. The Sun Devils would go on to win the game after Stephen Collins would net the final goal.
